Narrative Description of Project:
The earthquake of 7.6 in Richter scale occurred on October 8, 2005 had caused destructive damages in the extensive area, especially Muzaffarabad City, the capital of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. After the earthquake, “The Urgent Development Study on Rehabilitation and Reconstruction in Muzaffarabad City in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan” (hereinafter referred to “M/P Study”) was being carried out by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The progress report of the M/P Study recommended “the West Bank Bypass Construction Project” (hereinafter referred to “the Project”) as a top priority urgent rehabilitation project. The proposed bypass passes through river terrace in the west bank of the Jhelum River and Neelum River, starts from intersection in front of the Supreme Court in Kohala Muzaffarabad Road and ends at the intersection on the northern side of Chele Bandi Bridge in Neelum Valley Road. The bypass is expected to facilitate urgent rehabilitation and reconstruction of villages located at further north of Muzaffarabad City. Because of urgency of the Project, JICA has conducted preliminary design of the Project as a part of M/P Study. Resulting from the study, geometric criteria and route alignment of the bypass and extra-dosed bridge as an optimum bridge type of Naluchi Bridge over Jhelum River were selected. The objective of the study is to conduct basic design and detailed design of West Bank Bypass based on the preliminary design conducted in M/P Study in order to contribute facilitation of urgent rehabilitation and reconstruction in Muzaffarabad City. Furthermore, through the implementation of the Study transfer of technology with regard to road and bridge design required in rehabilitation and reconstruction for an earthquake disaster is also a purpose of the study.
