Diving Deep into the BESS Sector in the SEA

July 3, 2023

The Nippon Koei (NK) Asia Energy Team (AET) Deep Dive Workshop was held in March 2023 for two (2) days at the PT Indokoei International (IKI) Office in Jakarta, Indonesia. The workshop was attended by representatives of various NK offices in the region including Philkoei International, Inc. (PKII), which was represented by Geph Tabeta, the Business Development Specialist of the International Consulting Group (ICG) and Andrei Mallare of the Human Resources (HR) Department. The workshop was conducted as an immersive capacity building undertaking that involved lecture sessions with visual presentations, group work, and other exploratory activities that culminated in mock pitches and role playing. The purpose of this activity is for the AET members to meet and get to know each other in-person; have a thorough understanding about battery energy storage system (BESS) and NK’s BESS business; understand what the AET is tasked to do, its business plan, key performance indicators (KPIs) that need to be achieved, and the roles, responsibilities, and expectations of each member. The workshop was also expected to better equip the AET members with the necessary basic foundations regarding BESS to be able to source and analyze opportunities, and to put together proposals for potential clients as well as to elaborate detailed action plans in line with the AET Business Plan, which is to conduct proactive business development, build up order pipeline, and form financing partnerships with various agencies and stakeholders to penetrate each members’ local market.

Day one of the deep dive workshop was held on Thursday, March 9th and was facilitated by Ms. Jan Yeo of the Singapore Office. The morning discussion focused mostly in understanding and appreciating the basic foundation and necessity of BESS including its various forms, components, application, and economic viability while the afternoon session tackled mostly the BESS project lifecycle, business models, and business plan. The discussion also included strategies on how to spearhead proactive business development activities and how to identify potential targets and clients. The AET capped day one by having a team dinner where members were divided into groups and cooked their respective dishes. The purpose of this activity was to reinforce teamwork amongst the members of the AET as well as comraderies which would foster good working relationships with each other.

The second and last day of the deep dive workshop was held on Friday, March 10th and focused on role playing and practical application of strategies that was imparted to the AET in day one. The discussions on day two also included opportunity analyses, financial modelling, and partnership and how to approach targets and do follow up actions.

The workshop highlighted how innovative the BESS technology is, and the team was briefed on the challenging road ahead as an early mover in the introduction of this technology and consolidated service. It was also insightful that although the countries in Southeast Asia share a lot of commonalities, the approach by which the delegates from the different NKG companies chose to channel their business strategies is very different because of the dissimilarities in the energy market, policies, and overall acceptance of the proposed technology. At the end of the deep dive workshop, the AET was tasked to formulate a more detailed pitch deck guided by the learnings from the workshop, as well as additional supplementary materials provided by the facilitators in order for this initiative to materialize in the local market and eventually capturing a much larger scale in the region.
